Fertilizer FAQ's

Your questions, answered here!

Every season.  Every soil type.  Every situation.  We have your fertilizer questions and needs covered!

When should I feed my lawn?

Feed your turf throughout the year to promote overall health.

You can begin fertilizing in the spring.  When you see green, go!  Each feeding should be spaced at least 6 to 8 weeks apart.

Canadian holidays are an easy way to remember the best times to feed your lawn:  Easter, Victoria Day, Labour Day and Thanksgiving.

September is a great time to fertilize following the hot summer; and late October/early November is advised in order to help roots grow before winter for weed competition in the spring.

Should I fertilize before or after mowing?

A much-needed trim and a nourishing feeding through lawn mowing and fertilization are the best ways to help your grass start the new growing season on the right foot. However, you'll want to ensure you do these correctly: mow first, then fertilize.

Should I fertilize before or after rain?

Ideally, you want to apply fertilizer treatments to your lawn after it rains. However, you'll want to wait for the puddles on your lawn to sink into the soil and the grass blades to dry. It's also a good idea to fertilize your grass if it is sunny for a few days after it rains.

Should I fertilize my new lawn?

Always apply a starter fertilizer to the soil before or shortly after seeding. Applying a starter to the soil prior to seeding will not harm the seed. Best to apply fertilizer then the seed so that the seed is not disrupted by traffic.  Starter fertilizer provides extra phosphorous to stimulate root growth in new lawns.  Apply another half rate starter fertilizer 14 days after germination.

What about lawn clippings?

The most important thing you can do for your lawn is to feed it regularly.  Overseeding and fertilizing are two great ways of feeding your lawn.  Grass clippings contain the same beneficial nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium nutrients as fertilizer.  Lawn clippings can provide as much as 1/3 of your annual feeding requirement for your lawn.
