Overseeding Your Lawn In Fall
It's that time of year to be thinking about fall overseeding your lawn.
Overseeding your lawn every year will help to thicken thin areas, repair damage, and improve the appearance of your lawn. It is also the best way to fight weeds naturally.
Fall overseeding can also be referred to as late summer overseeding. Starting August 15th when daytime temperatures are still at a high and the nights become a little cooler and less humid, it’s an ideal time to overseed. The warmer days encourage growth, while the cooler nights give new seedlings a break from the heat. As we get past the "dog days" of summer, our monthly precipitation in August and September typically increase which aids in germination for young seedlings.
Fall overseeding is very similar to overseeding during other seasons. Removal of excess thatch, debris and conditioning the soil will help get the seed where it needs to be. You can also aerate your lawn ahead of time and have the seed make its way to the newly formed aerated area. The addition of SS Supreme Starter Fertilizer should also be applied at a ½ rate.
Seeding rates for overseeding will depend on the current turf coverage as a percent. On a scale of 1 – 10, with 1 being poor, you will need to apply at a full rate vs 10 being very good and just needing to seed at a light rate to maintain a healthy seed population to help fight weeds.
Irrigating on a regular basis will be necessary to promote seed germination and establishment. Do not wait for rain because it "never rains till it rains". The fall dew will help keep the seed moist and cool, but it will require regular moisture.
Fertilizer and seed can be applied separately or at the same time. When applying fertilizer and seed at the same time, spread the fertilizer first and then the seed to avoid less foot/wheel traffic to the seed. Best to apply fertilizer with rain or ensure you water in all of your fertilizer
